Italian man handed 2-year prison term, deportation for attempted robbery

An unemployed Italian man who attempted to rob a convenience store in New Taipei City in August this year, was sentenced to two years in prison, to be followed by deportation, Liberty Times reported today, November 29.

The New Taipei City District Court heard that G.M Bruno walked into a convenience store in Tucheng District wearing a motorcycle helmet and a raincoat at 9:00 pm, August 21. Bruno threatened a female clerk with a pair of scissors, but a male clerk managed to disarm Bruno. Bruno then escaped without any cash or stolen property.

During the trial, Bruno confessed to the crime. The judge considered that Bruno had not harmed the clerk, and the blade had not touched the clerk. Bruno was unsuccessful in the robbery attempt, and had reached a settlement with the victim. Therefore his sentence should be reduced.

The judge handed a sentence of two years in prison, and deportation immediately upon release. The case is appealable.
