The mayors of New Taipei City, Taichung City, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) have lodged protests after the international climate action group Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy listed Taiwan’s members as cities in China.
The group listed six Taiwan municipalities as “China” on its website – Taipei, New Taipei City, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung.
The New Taipei City government stated today, September 27, that it will never accept GCoM’ dwarfing Taiwan. An official statement said that New Taipei City had lodged a complaint with GCoM on September 15 with a demand for a correction. However, no reply or correction has been made so far.
Taichung City has also expressed dissatisfaction with the listing, noting that it had applied to join the organization under the title “Taichung City, Chinese Taipei.” The Taichung City Government said that the listing “Taichung, China” was obviously wrong, and have also called for it to be corrected as soon as possible, otherwise Taichung will not hesitate to withdraw from the alliance.
MOFA has also filed a solemn protest with GCoM.
