Gas Explosion in Kaohsiung Restaurant Injures 20

Up to 20 people were injured, with three in intensive care, after a gas explosion at a bento restaurant in Xiaogang District, Kaohsiung City this evening, February 1.

Liberty Times reports that a massive blast plunged the restaurant into a sea of fire at around 6:50 pm. Glass fragments showered the street, and the windows of nearby vehicles shattered. Video uploaded by the public to social media showed an intense blaze that ensued after the explosion. Both Liberty Times and China Times report that 18 people were injured by the blast and fire.

Apple Daily reports that 20 people were injured, 10 male and 9 female. Eleven people have been released from hospital after receiving first aid, three people remain in intensive care, one is in the surgery ward, and five are under observation, according to Apple Daily.

Kaohsiung City Fire Bureau dispatched 18 appliances to the blaze on Shanming Road, and firefighters had the fire extinguished by 7:16 pm. Liberty Times reported that students had been trapped in rental suites located above the restaurant.
