Four police officers injured after stand-off with mentally-ill man armed with knife
Four police officers were injured in Taoyuan City today after a man threatened to kill his mother and grandmother, then locked himself in a house until police broke in and restrained him.
Two officers responded to a call in Pingzhen District after a 40-year-old man named Zhang (張), who has a history of mental illness, held a kitchen knife and threatened to kill his mother and grandmother. Both women fled the house, but were injured when they fell over during their escape.
The officers persuaded Zhang to put the knife down and exit his grandmother’s house, but Zhang refused to accompany the officers to the police station. The officers scuffled with Zhang, and one officer suffered a leg injury, and was unable to continue. Having overpowered the police officers, Zhang fled the scene on a scooter.
Zhang went to his home and locked himself in. More than 10 police officers were dispatched to the scene, but Zhang, armed with a kitchen chopper, refused to come out.
After a stand-off of around 2 hours, one group of officers entered the house from a broken window on the second floor, while another group broke a window and entered from the first floor.
Zhang, still armed with the chopper, resisted arrest, and two officers received cuts to their hands and arms. Another officer was cut on the chin. Two of the officers required stitches.
After being disarmed, Zhang continued to fiercely resist, and had to be strapped to a stretcher to be taken to hospital by ambulance.
