Fire at Taipei City Grand Hyatt Hotel prompts evacuation of more than 200 people

258 people were evacuated after a fire broke out at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Taipei City’s Xinyi District this evening, January 17.

Taipei City Fire Department started receiving reports of a large amount of thick smoke coming out of the building at 5:12 pm. The fire department dispatched 26 firefighting vehicles, three ambulances, and 92 personnel to the scene of the incident.

The fire was said to be under control at 5:28 pm. Nobody was trapped and there were no injuries, according to reports.

The hotel’s public relations department said the the fire had started in a kitchen on basement level 3.

The fire department said that the source of the fire was an oven and associated vent, and that an area of around 2 meters square had been affected.
