Drunk Maserati driver killed after slamming into truck

A 38-year-old man was killed instantly when he slammed into a truck at high speed in Taoyuan City yesterday, September 17.

Mr Lee was driving his Maserati sports car on Nantun Road in Luzhu District shortly after 4:00am, when a logistics truck pulled out of a depot and executed a left turn across an intersection. Traffic monitor footage showed Lee slamming into the side of the truck at full-speed, without applying the brakes.

The Maserati was lodged under the truck, and Lee had no signs of life when rescue workers arrived at the scene. Lee did not respond to resuscitation efforts and was declared dead at the hospital.

Blood tests revealed that Lee had a blood alcohol concentration level of 0.995 mg/l, around 4 times the legal alcohol limit for drivers (0.25 mg/l, 0.05%).

The driver of the truck, Mr Zhang, 45, was tested at the scene, and was found to be not affected by alcohol.

While drunk driving is considered a major factor, police are still investigating whether other factors were involved in the cause of the accident.
