Bus crash on freeway leaves 4 dead, 22 injured
Four people died and 22 were injured after a crash involving a tour bus and an SUV on National Highway 3 in Yunlin County today, October 21.
According to reports, a tour bus crashed into the central traffic divider and collided with a car at around 9:40 am.
The Yunlin County Fire Department dispatched four firetrucks, 10 ambulances, and 30 personnel to the scene of the accident.
Four people were found without breathing and heartbeat. A 12 year old boy who had been sitting at the back of the bus was obviously dead, and not sent to the hospital. A 48-year old female bus passenger was without vital signs and was later declared dead at the hospital. A 50-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man who were traveling in the car were also critically injured and later died at the hospital.
Twenty-two people on the bus suffered minor injuries.
A United Daily News report included witness statements from passengers on the bus suggesting the the driver was driving fast, and constantly overtaking and weaving in and out of traffic before the crash.
According to the preliminary police investigation, the bus was traveling in the outer lane and clipped a car as the bus driver was attempting to overtake it. The bus careered across multiple lanes before hitting the central traffic divider, then hit the car for the second time.
The tour bus was carrying 40 people at the time of the accident. The bus was one of five chartered to take employees of a tech company and family members on a day trip to an amusement park in Yunlin County.
