American Teacher Dies After being Hit and Run Over
An American cram school teacher died in Hsinchu yesterday January 30, after being knocked over by a scooter and run over by three vehicles. According to police and media reports, Kane Renner, 32 was walking home around 4AM Saturday morning after having drinks with friends. While walking on the side of the road he was hit from behind by a scooter which sent him flying into the center of the road.
It was dark and raining at the time. Poor visibility and slippery road conditions resulted in three vehicles being unable to stop in time. When emergency workers arrived at the scene, Mr Renner was trapped under the 3rd vehicle, a small truck and showed no signs of life . Emergency workers used a crane to lift the truck and performed CPR all the way to the hospital but were unable to revive him.
Mr Renner, from Montana, USA, was well-loved by his students and had a wide circle of friends. He was a keen photographer.

This story has been updated. Police are now reporting he was hit by a van first, not a scooter. The van driver fled the scene. The van was used in the morning and later abandoned. All 3 drivers who ran over Kane after have been arrested. The driver of the first car to hit him after the van was speeding and drunk.
Thanks for the update, and for clarifying the information. The owner of the van claimed it had been stolen. Have police investigated further and attempted to determine who is responsible? There are surveillance cameras everywhere here, so the person who stole the van and dumped it should be able to be identified.
My condolences to the family. Unfortunately, this barbaric and wholly preventable slaughter of innocent human life in Taiwan is commonplace, as reckless, irresponsible driving is socially acceptable and lax law enforcement is the norm rather than the exception.
Poor weather conditions should never hinder a motorists’ ability to avoid collisions, as they could and should be driving more slowly and doubling their stopping distance to compensate for reduced visibility. A seven year old kid with a copy of the Written Driving Theory Test could tell you this. “That’s just the way we drive in Taiwan” is a pathetic, racist and self-loathing attempt at an excuse, peddled by morons with pedestrians’ blood on their hands and accepted by apathetic, inhumane and unprincipled cretins with their brains splattered across the windscreen of their own self-importance.
