11 illegal migrant workers found hidden in back of truck in Taitung City

Police in Taitung City enforcing a ban on gravel trucks on restricted roads found a group of illegal Vietnamese workers hiding in the back of a truck.

Police officers pulled over the truck at around 4:00pm Thursday, January 10, on Heping Road in Beinan Township at a road-stop manned by 10 police officers.

Officers reported that the truck driver had a negative attitude, and was uncooperative and evasive when questioned. One of the officers noticed suspicious movement under the black tarpaulin which covered the tray of the truck.

When officers lifted the tarpaulin, they discovered 11 people, most of whom had no identity documents. One of the suspects attempted to escape and was chased for around 100 meters before being caught.

Of the 11 Vietnamese nationals, one was found to have absconded from his authorized place of work, nine had over-stayed their visas, and one was working illegally on a tourist visa.

The group was handed over to the National Immigration Agency to be detained and deported.
