10 Vehicle Freeway Pile-up: 1 Dead, 3 Injured
One man died and eight people were injured after an accident involving 10 vehicles on National Freeway 3 in Miaoli County late this afternoon, September 25.
According to reports in Apple Daily and United Daily News this evening, at around 5:25pm, a multi-vehicle crash occurred at the 137.3km mark in the northbound lanes involving 3 large trucks, a small truck, and six cars. One vehicle was crushed under a truck, trapping the occupants.
A slightly injured five-month pregnant woman was cut out of the vehicle, but refused to get into an ambulance until her husband was rescued. The woman, named Zhao, sat huddled and wrapped in a blanket on the roadside as firefighters spent more than 40 minutes to pull her soldier husband out of the mangled wreck of the vehicle. “I can’t live without my husband; quickly rescue him.” Ms Zhao called to firefighters, according to Apple Daily. When Mr Zhao was finally pulled out of the vehicle, he had no signs of life and was later declared dead at the hospital.
The accident completely blocked the northbound lanes of the freeway, causing traffic to back up for more than 5 kilometers. Immediately after the accident, people got out of cars and helped injured people out of their vehicles as they waited for emergency service personnel to arrive.
One person was seriously injured and 7 people suffered injuries described as not serious.
Highway Police investigators are currently investigating the cause the of accident.
