1 Dead, 7 Injured in Taipei Fire: Arson Suspect Arrested
A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire swept through a residential apartment in Taipei City in the early hours of the morning today, March 1. A 54 year-old woman died in the blaze, while 7 people were treated for minor injuries.
The second-floor apartment on Longjiang Road was divided into wooden cubicles and rented as staff quarters for a steak restaurant downstairs. It is believed that a man named Zhang had a dispute with a tenant named Lee. Witnesses said that Zhang went out and came back with a container of gasoline, which he poured over a table and lit.
Eighteen fire appliances, 5 ambulances, and a total of 68 personnel were dispatched to the scene. Twenty-six people were evacuated from the building and 14 were rescued using fire ladders.
Zhang fled on a bicycle and was arrested in Songshan District at around 8:00am this morning.
