1 Dead, 1 Critical after Tire blow-out on Freeway

A man was thrown out of the back of a truck and killed instantly after a driver lost control of the vehicle due to a tire blowout on National Highway 3 near the Sanxia/Ying-ge exit this afternoon. Another passenger was trapped under the vehicle and is fighting for his life in hospital.

At around 12:50pm, a small truck driven by a 34 year-old man named Shen was traveling northbound from Taoyuan to New Taipei City when the rear-left tire blew out. A 46 year-old man named Cai sat in the passenger seat, and a 22 year-old man named Yang sat in the rear tray of the truck.

The driver lost control of the vehicle as it fishtailed and spun 180 degrees before flipping over and hitting the guardrail. Video footage from the truck’s dash-cam and rear camera showed Yang being thrown out of the vehicle and hitting the pavement. Cai was also thrown out of the vehicle, and his upper body was trapped under it when firefighters and paramedics arrived at the scene.

Both Mr Yang, and Mr Cai lost vital signs at the scene of the accident. Yang was declared dead at the hospital, while Cai was resuscitated but remains in a critical condition.
