Bus drivers spotted stopping to check for pedestrians on zebra crossing in New Taipei City
Two bus drivers in New Taipei City were seen stopping and checking for pedestrians on a zebra crossing before proceeding, and a witness was so pleasantly surprised that he uploaded dash-cam footage of the incident to social media.
The video footage, was recorded at 8:56am last Friday, March 15, and shows two buses in succession turning right onto Minzu Road in Banqiao District. Both drivers stopped and made a gesture pointing left and right, confirming no pedestrians were on the crossing before proceeding.
“I thought I was in Japan,” the person who uploaded the video wrote.
People commenting on the video heaped praise on the drivers, while bus users in New Taipei City confirmed having seen bus drivers recently using the same process to check for pedestrians before proceeding.
A reader from Changhua County wrote that he hoped that every county and city can implement the practice.
Two women died in separate incidents in Taipei City in the last month after being hit by buses turning right across pedestrian crossings.
On March 12, a 44-year-old woman named Ye died after being hit by a bus turning right from Chongqing Road onto Zhongxiao West Road.
February 20, a 20-year-old university student died after being struck by a bus making a right turn outside of Chinese Culture University’s Yangmingshan campus.
Both women were attempting to cross the road on zebra crossings at the time.

By law, all road users are required to adhere to road code by which ‘stopping at zebra crossings’ are just one of many road rules. Driving in Taiwan is perilous. As a foreigner with a full Taiwan driving licence, I suggest scrapping the current Learner driving process and let people learn on the road in order for improved driving preparation. Instead, one learns to ‘cheat’ to complete the driving course and within a month, you have a full licence without gaining much driving experience.
