Weather system near Taiwan expected to intensify into tropical storm or typhoon

A low pressure system hovering just east of Taiwan is expected to intensify into a tropical depression tomorrow, before intensifying into a tropical storm over the weekend, and bringing heavy rain as it nears Taiwan early next week.

Chang Cheng-chuan, forecaster for Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration said that the low pressure system 97W located 500 kilometers east of Taiwan will form Tropical Depression TD22 as soon as tomorrow. The system is expected to continue to intensify into a tropical storm as early as Saturday. It is expected to move northwest close to Taiwan from Monday to Wednesday, and the possibility of landfall has not been ruled out. While there may be variability in the forecast path, it is expected that the system will bring heavy rain to northern and eastern Taiwan.

Chang said that the CWA has the system under continuous observation.

Weather experts on Taiwan Typhoon Forum said that 97W lacks guiding airflow, and therefore is moving slowly. The slow movement means the impact time may be prolonged. The system will also combine with northeastern monsoonal winds, increasing the likelihood and intensity of rain in northern Taiwan.
