Two Tainan City properties strafed with submachine gun fire: suspected political motivation

The campaign office of Democratic Progressive Party candidate, and a building owned by a member of the Democratic Progressive Party Executive Committee were strafed by gunshots in the early hours of this morning, November 10, in what may be a politically-motivated act 16 days ahead of upcoming elections, November 26.

Tainan City Police responded to reports of gunshots fired at the service office of Councilor Hsieh Tsai-wang (謝財旺) at around 3:00 am. Investigators found the steel roller-door of the office riddled with 30 bullet holes, and spent bullet shells scattered on the road surface. Surveillance camera footage showed that a suspect on a scooter stopped in front of the office and fired several bursts with what appears to be a submachine gun before speeding away.

Later it was found that around 10 minutes before shooting at the councilor’s office, the shooter had strafed a building belonging to Democratic Progressive Party Executive member Kuo Tzai-chin (郭再欽). Investigators found that 58 shots had been fired at the building.

A total of 88 shots had been fired in the two incidents, but fortunately, nobody was injured.

Police are currently attempting to identify the gunman and clarify the motivation for the crime.

Councilor Hsieh is a non-party-affiliated independent, and is not running in the upcoming elections. However, Hsieh is supporting his daughter, Hsieh Shu-fan (謝舒凡), who is a nominee for the Democratic Progressive Party, and the office is currently being used as Hsieh Shu-fan’s campaign office.
