Tropical depression to bring rain to southern Taiwan, and could intensify into tropical storm today

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau (CWB) warns that southern Taiwan will likely see heavy rain as tropical depression TD07 approaches, and say it may intensify into a tropical storm today, August 10.

The CWB issued a report yesterday, August 9, saying that tropical depression TD07 formed in the South China Sea 630 kilometers south-southwest of the Hengchun Peninsular and is moving north at around 24 kilometers per hour.

Maritime operators are urged to pay attention to the latest weather information, the bureau said.

The tropical weather system is expected to head into the southern end of the Taiwan Strait before moving west into China. The current path significantly deviates from the former predicted path that saw the system moving through the Bashi Strait to the east coast of Taiwan.

The CWB also sees the possibility of the system to intensify into a named tropical storm as it approaches Taiwan this morning.

Even if system does not intensify into a tropical storm, it is still expected to bring heavy rain to southern areas, including Taitung on Taiwan’s east coast, and potentially strong wind gusts on coasts south of Taichung City, and islands in the Taiwan Strait.

Another tropical system, called TD08 by the CWB is also being monitored. TD08 is located approximately 2,600 kilometers northeast of Taipei, and has already been upgraded to tropical storm by the US military Joint Typhoon Warning Center, although not named by any national weather bureau at the time of writing.
