Three Arrested in ATM Hack Case: Money Recovered

Three men were arrested today after a week-long manhunt for a group responsible for the theft of more than 80 million New Taiwan Dollars over the weekend of July 9-10.

Latvian national, Peregudovs Andrejs, 41, was arrested in Dong-ao after being recognized by an off-duty police officer holidaying in Ilan County on Taiwan’s east coast.

Another two suspects who had been under surveillance in Taipei City were arrested soon afterwards. The two Romanian men had accessed a locker rented by Andrejs two days ago and removed luggage left by Andrejs. Police kept them under surveillance in the hope of catching Andrejs or other accomplices if they tried to make contact with them.

Around 50 million of the more than 80 million Taiwan Dollar haul was recovered from three suitcases in possession of the two men in Taipei.

When arrested, Andrejs had only NTD$3000 (around USD$94) on his person. He was riding a Giant brand bicycle and was carrying a red backpack.

According to police, Andrejs had used Air B&B to find accommodation in Ilan and was recognized by a taxi driver yesterday. However, a search of the area failed to find him.

He was recognized today after enjoying a meal of sweet and sour fish with rice at a restaurant in Dong-Ao.

After his arrest, Andrejs was taken to a police station in Ilan where he refused to answer questions in English. He was later transferred to Taipei. Provided with a Russian interpreter at around 11pm he refused to be interrogated, stating that he was too tired. Police will Question him tomorrow.
