Spanish tourist dies after scooter hit by truck in Pingtung County
A Spanish woman who entered Taiwan on a tourist visa died after a truck driving on the wrong side of the road hit her scooter in Pingtung County last night, September 4.
The 26-year-old woman, who is not named in media reports, was on her way back to a homestay in Manzhou Township when a light truck crossed the double-yellow lines and smashed head-on into her scooter the Fenshuiling section of County Road 200 in Changle Village shortly after 8:30 pm.
Firefighters responded to reports at 8:42 pm and found the woman trapped under the truck in a drainage ditch. Firefighters used winches to move the truck and extracted the woman, but she had lost vital signs at the scene of the accident.
According to reports, ambulance personnel performed CPR on the way to the hospital. However, the woman was declared dead at the Hengchun Tourism Hospital at 11:40 pm.
According to United Daily News, the woman had suffered serious head injuries and multiple fractures.
Neither the deceased nor the 31-year-old driver of the truck, named Liu, were affected by alcohol at the time.
The woman had been in Taiwan for six months, and had been frequently traveling between Hualien, Taitung, and Pingtung, some reports noted.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
