Search for French couple lost in Taiwan’s Central Mountain Range enters 3rd day
Update: Couple found during air search. Airlifted to hospital for a medical check-up.
Pingtung County, Taiwan – A search and rescue operation is underway in a remote mountain district of Pingtung County, after a French couple hiking in the area reported that they were lost two days ago.
The Pingtung County Fire Department received a distress call from a 38-year old man, and a 30-year-old woman at 9:30 am, November 26. The couple reported that they had entered the Wutai Mountain trail in Wutai Township on November 23, equipped with backpacks and machetes, but had lost their way.
The fire department immediately launched a land and air search for the couple.
A fire department spokesperson said that around 30 personnel have been dispatched for ground searches, divided into three groups focusing on the Beidawu Mountain trail, and Alangyi Ancient Road trail.
The fire department estimated it would take the ground rescue team approximately three days to reach the coordinates provided by the lost couple.
An air search was called off yesterday due to thick clouds and poor visibility. A helicopter was dispatched at 9:00 am today to drop off supplies to rescue teams, and then continue to search over the target area.
