Runaway Truck Leaves Trail of Destruction in Nantou City
Seven people were injured, one critically, after a truck loaded with bricks lost brakes and barreled downhill into traffic stopped at an intersection in Nantou City this evening, September 14.
A total of 18 vehicles were damaged or destroyed, according to Apple Daily, after the truck left a trail of destruction for a length of more than 300 meters.
At around 5:40pm, the flatbed semi-trailer fully loaded with pallets of bricks estimated to weigh 20 to 30 tons, according to United Daily News, suffered brake failure on a downhill section of Minzu Road.
The truck picked up speed on the approach to the intersection of Minzu Road and Nangang Road. The driver of the truck sounded his horn as a warning, and tried to veer into the opposite lane to avoid vehicles stopped at a red light.
Video footage of the incident shows a school bus in the opposite lane moving out of the way in the seconds before the truck veers into the left lane. The driver of the out of control truck attempts to squeeze between the bus and the cars, but sideswipes the stopped cars, sending them smashing into other vehicles like bowling pins. The truck then careers through the intersection, narrowly missing vehicles.
The truck finally stopped after hitting a Hummer and a tree in front of the Taipower Nantou Service Center, narrowly avoiding hitting a crowded restaurant area.
Nantou County Police Bureau said that 7 people were injured in the accident and one remains in a critical condition.
