Rebar collapse on Kaohsiung City construction site leaves 1 dead, 4 injured
One person died, and four others are injured, one in a critical condition, after a stack of rebar collapsed on a construction site in Kaohsiung City’s Gushan District this morning, March 4.
At 9:20 am, five workers were tying rebar five floors underground when a stack of three-meter high rebar collapsed like dominoes for a length of between 40 and 50 meters, leaving two people trapped. Three others were injured but managed to extricate themselves from the tangle of steel bars.
Firefighter paramedics faced a difficult rescue operation, unable to use their standard equipment to cut through the reinforcement bars. The two trapped workers lost vital signs at the scene of the accident.
All five injured had to be lifted out of the 18 meter deep basement on stretchers by crane.
Of the two OHCA patients, a 50-year-old man named Fang recovered heartbeat, and a 22-year-old man named Chen was declared dead at 11:47 am. Fang remains in a critical condition.
Work on the site has been shut down while the Labor Bureau conducts an investigation into the accident.
