Police officer killed, 5 people injured after suspected drug driver crash in New Taipei City
A police officer died, and five people were injured, after a driver suspected to be under the influence of drugs slammed head-on into two cars stopped at a red light in New Taipei City’s Sanchong District early this morning, July 13.
According to reports, a police patrol car and a multi-taxi were stopped at a red light at the intersection of Zhengyi North Road and Longmen Road at when a silver Mercedes Benz slammed head-on into the police patrol car at around 1:30 am.
A 28-year-old police officer, named Huang, lost vital signs at the scene of the accident and was later declared dead at the hospital. A 22-year-old police officer, named Zhou, and four other people, including the driver of the taxi, were injured.
The driver of the Mercedes Benz, also named Huang, was slightly injured. Huang claimed to have been affected by fatigue at the time of the accident. However, Huang was suspected of driving at around 120 kilometers an hour at the time, and has a criminal history involving drugs and weapons charges. An alcohol breath test revealed that Huang was not under the influence of alcohol, but police suspect that he may have been under the influence of drugs.
Huang was handed over to the District Prosecutor’s Office to face charges including endangering the public and negligent homicide.
The deceased police officer was married and had a 4-year-old son.
