Parcel bursts into flames, destroys mail in Taoyuan City post office
More than 100 parcels were destroyed after a package suddenly caught fire while being sorted at a post office in Taoyuan City this morning.
According to Taoyuan City Fire Department, mail workers were sorting mail at the Xinwu District Post Office when a package suddenly began emitting smoke at 7:56 am. Post office personnel attempted to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher, but the flames quickly spread to other packages.
The fire department dispatched 5 vehicles and 32 personnel to the scene, and the fire was extinguished at 8:17 am.
According to post office staff, around 100 packages were destroyed in the fire.
Forensic investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire, and suspect prohibited items were involved.
Post office officials said that owners of uninsured parcels destroyed in the fire will be compensated according to the weight of the parcel. A single package weighing up to 5 kilograms will be compensated to a maximum of NT$575. For packages weighing between 5 kilograms and 10 kilograms, compensation will be paid to a maximum of NT$865.
