Nice save! Scooter couple still standing after high-speed hit by runaway truck wheel
A couple riding a scooter in Tainan City not only survived being hit by a spare wheel that fell off a truck, but managed to stay on their feet after the scooter went down, yesterday, August 28.
A 22-year-old man named Zhang was carrying a female pillion passenger on Renai Street in Yongkang District at around 2:00 pm, when the spare wheel of a light truck travelling in the opposite direction suddenly became detached, and bounced into oncoming traffic lanes, hitting Zhang’s scooter.
In a dashcam video of the incident that quickly went viral on social media today, Zhang is seen applying lightning-speed reflexes to apply his brakes, then reaching back to steady his passenger as the scooter goes down.
The couple then manage to jump off the falling motorcycle, and avoid falling onto the tarmac themselves.
The couple sustained only minor skin abrasions in the incident.
Zhang earned the praise of hundreds of commenters on Facebook, for his quick reactions and consideration for his passenger. Many of the viewers urged his female passenger to marry him.
Police are currently investigating the incident. A Tainan City, Yongkang branch police officer named Lai said that the 29-year-old truck driver, named Jiang, was tested and found not to be affected by alcohol. The driver is liable to be fined NT$3,000 to NT$18,000 in accordance with Article 30 of the Road Traffic Management Law, Lai said.
