Mummified Corpse Found in House
Graphic Image Warning!
Real-estate agents inspecting a house in Chiayi County ahead of a foreclosure sale, were shocked to discover a mummified corpse in a bathroom.
The corpse is believed to be the owner of the house owner, Mr Liao.
Mr Liao 64 had inherited the house after his parents died a couple of years ago, but did not make the mortgage payments.
The bank and its agents could not locate Mr Liao, so they contacted his younger brother to accompany them to inspect the house and assess cleaning costs in preparation for a foreclosure auction.
The brothers had not contacted each other over the years after a dispute.
Mr Liao and the agents entered the house on September 16 and found the corpse in a supine position on the floor of a locked bathroom on the second floor.
Police said that the were no signs of a struggle or visible injuries to the body. DNA samples were taken and an autopsy will be carried out tomorrow in an attempt to determine the cause of death.
Mail and other documents found in the house suggest that the man died more than 2 years ago.
Investigators said that the bathroom was air-tight and therefore neighbors were not alerted to the smell after the man died. The environment inside the bathroom was described as completely dry.
