Man suspected of shooting jewelry store owner during attempted robbery arrested in Hualien City

A suspect in an attempted armed robbery case in which the proprietor of a jewelry store in Yilan County was shot, Wednesday, October 6, was arrested in Hualien City today, October 8.

At around 7:50 pm Wednesday, a man entered a jewelry store on Renai Road in Jiaoxi Township and immediately fired a shot at the 69 year old store owner, named Lin, before demanding Lin’s son hand over gold jewelry.

However, Mr Lin junior refused the would-be robber’s demand, and instead picked up a chair and swung it at the thief while yelling loudly for him to get out.

The thief ran out of the store and fled the scene on a scooter.

Mr Lin remained conscious and was rushed to hospital where it was found that the bullet had grazed his left-side forehead, fracturing his skull and leaving an abrasion, but without penetration. Lin underwent surgery for a slight brain hemorrhage, and remained in hospital under observation.

Police arrested a man name Chen at his home in Hualien City at around noon yesterday, October 7. After the interrogation, during which Chen confessed to the crime, he was handed over to district prosecutors to be charged on suspicion of attempted murder, attempted robbery with a lethal weapon, and violations of firearms and weapons regulations.

Prosecutor’s applied to the Yilan District Court for a detention order today, October 8, on the grounds that the suspect’s crimes were serious and carried a minimum penalty of more than five years imprisonment. In addition, there was a risk of destruction of evidence, as the gun used in the crime has not yet been found.
