Heavy Rain Advisory, Flood Warning, and Rockfall Alerts issued for Northern Taiwan

The Central Weather Bureau this morning issued an extremely heavy rain advisory for northern districts, the Water Resources Department issued a level 1 flood warning for Keelung City, and flood-prone districts of Taipei City, and the Council of Agriculture issued mudslide and rockfall alerts for 6 townships and 30 villages.

The CWB warning issued at 8:20am predicted extremely heavy torrential rain for New Taipei City, and mountain districts of Taipei City, extremely heavy rain for Ilan County, and heavy rain for Hualian, Taidong, and parts of Pingtung County on the east coast.

According to meteorologists, the heavy rain is being generated by a continental front and the presence of a tropical low pressure system in the Bashi Channel.

According to the CWB a cumulative total of more than 500 millimeters has fallen in Yangmingshan District over a 24 hour period.

In Keelung City, torrential rain began at around 7:00am, flooding roads in several districts, including Anle District, where a total of 75.5 millimeters of rainfall fell between 7:00am and 8:00am.

The rain is not expected to ease at least until Wednesday, according to the CWB.
