Four Children Orphaned after Parents Drown in Rescue Attempt
A couple who took their four children to a popular swimming hole in Shuangxi District, New Taipei City, drowned after jumping into the water in an attempt to rescue two of the children who had gotten into difficulty after entering deep water, yesterday, June 2.
The nine year-old daughter of the couple named Lin lost her footing and panicked after entering a deep part of the swimming hole. The eldest child, a thirteen year-old boy, dived in and swam to his sister’s aid, but soon called for help as he struggled to get the girl to shore.
The children’s father, fully clothed, entered the water in an attempt to help his children, but soon found himself in trouble, as he was unable to swim. The mother, who also lacked swimming ability, followed her husband.
Both children managed to make it back to shallow water, but by the time they reached the shore, the parents had disappeared under water.
The children alerted a nearby resident who entered the water and located the couple around 5 minutes later. Rescue workers who arrived at the scene were unable to resuscitate the pair and they were declared dead at the hospital shortly after 5:00pm.
