Fatal Hit and Run: Victim’s Leg Found 3km Away
A man riding a scooter was killed in Banciao District of New Taipei City after being hit by a Mercedes Benz that ran a red light in the early hours of the morning, Wednesday June 14.
The victim was thrown 30 meters from the point of impact, and his leg was severed below the knee. However, police and ambulance officers were unable to locate the missing limb. The 55 year-old scooter rider was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Several hours later, a member of the public called police after finding the lower leg 3 kilometers away on Heping West Road.
Police patrolling in Banciao District at around 4:45am followed a silver Mercedes Benz after it made an illegal turn through a red light. The officers signaled to the driver to pull over, but the driver continued to Hsinpu MRT station where he dropped off a female passenger.
When police approached the vehicle on foot, the driver sped away. The officers said they tried to chase the car, but it was already too far away so they gave up. Shortly after they received a report of an accident at the intersection of Wenhua Road and Shuangshi Road, 800 meters away.
After locating the victim’s leg, the car was found nearby, but the driver had absconded.
