Family of 3 killed in horrific freeway crash
Three people died and one was seriously injured after a car overturned, causing an accident involving four vehicles, on National Highway 1 in Nantou County, yesterday, Monday, December 18.
Nantou County Fire Department responded to reports of an accident at the 246.9 kilometer mark in the northbound lanes in Zhushan Township at around 10:30 pm.
First responders found the body of a woman named Hsieh on the road. Hsieh was obviously dead after being thrown out of the car and run over by other vehicles, and was not sent to the hospital. Inside the mangled wreck of one vehicle were a 43-year-old man, named Shih, and a one-year-old child. Both Shih and the child were without vital signs and were declared dead after arrival at the hospital.
The 63-year-old driver of another vehicle, named Yan, was slightly injured, and a 60-year-old female passenger in Yan’s vehicle, named Wu, was seriously injured.
According to the investigation so far, Shih and Hsieh were a married couple travelling with their child. According to witnesses, Shih’s vehicle hit the central traffic divider and overturned. Yan was unable to stop his vehicle in time and ran into the roof of the overturned vehicle. Two other vehicles were also involved, having run over Ms Hsieh.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Police urged the public to wear seatbelts at all times while traveling in a vehicle, to remain alert and not drive while fatigued. If you feel tired, pull up at a highway rest stop and take a rest, a police spokesperson said.
