Extremely heavy rain expected as Typhoon Kong-rey heads for Taiwan’s east coast
Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration predicts that areas of northern and eastern Taiwan will experience extremely heavy rain from tonight, Wednesday, until Friday, November 1, as Typhoon Kong-rey approaches on a trajectory to make landfall on the east coast around midday tomorrow, Thursday.
The CWA issued a land and maritime alert for Typhoon Kong-rey at 5:30 am. The initial land warning covers Taitung County and the Hengchun Peninsula, and is expected to expand in subsequent alerts as the storm gets closer and continues to intensify and expand. Kong-rey is currently located 530 kilometers southeast of Taiwan’s most southerly point, Point Eluanbi, and is moving northwest at a speed of 14 kilometers per hour.
CWA says that Kong-rey is a mid-level typhoon, but as it continues to intensify, it may reach the category of “strong typhoon.” With a storm radius of 300 kilometers, it is also considered to be a large typhoon. The inner storm radius is around 100 kilometers wide and packing sustained winds of 48 meters per second (173 km/h) with gusts up to 58 meters per second (208 km/h).
According to CWA forecasts, due to the outer circulation of Kong-rey, heavy rain will be experienced today in the north of Taiwan, Yilan County, Hualien, and Taitung. The rain will gradually increase throughout today, tonight, and tomorrow as the storm circle covers the whole island. Yilan County and Hualien County are expected to bear the brunt of the rainfall, with an estimated 800 to 1,200 millimeters. Mountain areas of Taitung County will receive an estimated 500 to 800 millimeters of rainfall.
As of Wednesday morning, heavy rain advisories are in effect for Keelung City, coastal and mountain areas of New Taipei City, and mountain areas of Yilan County. Strong wind advisories have been issued for coastal areas of Taitung County, Pingtung County, Penghu County, and the west coast from Yunlin to Taoyuan.
