Taiwan’s global shipping giant Evergreen Marine Corp (TWSE: 2603) has commissioned Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries to build 20 new 15,000 TEU container ships, the company announced today, March 25.

Evergreen Marine’s board of directors recently approved the construction of 20 new 15,000 TEU ships due to a rise in global demand.

Each ship will be constructed at a price of US$115-130 million, with a total transaction value of US$2.3-2.6 billion, according to today’s press release.

Taiwan has a shipbuilding industry. So why was this order given to a South Korean company?

Taiwan’s shipbuilding industry doesn’t have the capacity for this size of ship. They are always outsourced to Japan or Korea.

Why doesn’t it have the capacity? It’s had 70 years to get its act together.
