Driver climbs out of Mini Cooper crushed by gravel truck
A driver climbed out on his own, but suffered three broken ribs, after a gravel truck crashed into a Mini Cooper, crushing it against the central traffic divider on National Highway 1 in Hsinchu County, Friday, April 7.
According to reports, the driver of the Mini Cooper was traveling in the fast lane of the freeway southbound at the 83 kilometer mark in Hukou Township at around 2:40 pm, when a gravel truck in the center lane bumped into a van before veering left and crashing into the small car.
The Mini Cooper was crushed and left sandwiched between the gravel truck and the central traffic divider.
The driver was seen clambering out of the crushed car on his own. Paramedics helped him down from the car and rushed him to hospital where he was treated for scratches, bruises, and three broken ribs.
The driver of the gravel car was also sent to hospital with unspecified minor injuries. Police tested both drivers and found that neither were driving under the influence of alcohol.
No reports mentioned the condition of the driver of the van which was seen rolling over after being rear-ended by the gravel truck.
The accident left both the inner and outer southbound lanes of the freeway blocked, resulting in a 10-kilometer-long traffic jam.
