China lockdown madness: elderly patient put into body bag alive, handed over for cremation
Government officials have confirmed that the staff of a Shanghai nursing home put a patient into a body bag and handed it over to undertakers for cremation, but had to take “the body” back after the undertakers saw movement, and found the man was still alive, according to Chinese news reports.
Video footage of the incident circulated widely on Chinese social media yesterday, May 1. In the videos, taken from two angles, two undertakers are seen pulling a body bag out of a hearse after detecting movement. While one staff member of the nursing home looks on, the undertakers unzip the bag, and remove a cloth covering the patient’s face.
The nursing home staff then puts the cloth back over the patients face, closes the body bag, and consults with two other nursing home staff before the three go back to the hearse and wheel the stretcher back into the nursing home.
Chinese language media reports say that the incident occurred at the New Long March Memorial Welfare Institute and that the undertakers were from the Shanghai Baoshan District Funeral Home. The reports also noted that the New Long March Memorial Institute and Putuo District Civil Affairs Bureau have both confirmed the incident.
Along with the confirmation, authorities said that the elderly patient was sent to a hospital where his vital signs have stabilized.
The Civil Affairs Bureau stated that it has quickly established a joint investigation team with relevant departments, stationed in the new Long March Welfare Institute, and will punish those responsible.
Shocked Chinese social media users compared the incident to a scene from a horror movie.
