Abandoned Newborn found on Riverbank in Hualien
A woman found a newborn baby in a carry bag under a bridge in Xincheng Township, Hualien County, yesterday evening. The baby still had the umbilical cord attached and was covered in blood and meconium.
At around 5:30pm, Ms Lee went to tend her vegetable patch on the banks of of a stream near Xinsheng Bridge, when she heard the cries of a baby from the direction of the bridge. At first, Lee assumed the sound was coming from on the bridge and paid no mind, but the wailing continued.
Lee searched for half an hour before finally finding the baby wrapped in a blue towel, and packed in a dark carry bag in a patch of long grass on the riverbank.
The baby boy was taken to Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital where it was found to be suffering from a low body temperature of 34.8°C, and mild hypoglycemia, but was otherwise healthy.
Medical staff said that the baby weighs 3,440 grams, and appears to be a full-term birth.
Police are attempting to find the mother of the baby.
