4 dead after 3 truck crashes on National Highway 3: pile-up in tunnel causes commuter headache
Four people have died in three separate traffic accidents on National Highway 3 since late last night, and a 15-vehicle pile-up caused a major traffic jam in the northbound lanes in Taoyuan city this morning.
Drunk driving suspected in container truck crash
Police and firefighters responded to reports of a single-vehicle accident involving a container truck near the Daxi exit in the southbound lanes of National Highway 3 in Taoyuan City at around 11:20 pm yesterday. Firefighters rescued the 34-year-old driver, named Jiang, from the overturned vehicle, but he had lost vital signs, and was later declared dead at the hospital. A blood test determined that Jiang was over the legal alcohol limit at the time of the crash.
Drivers of broken down truck and tow truck killed in Miaoli County
The driver of a broken down truck, and a tow truck driver who came to his assistance, were killed after a gravel truck plowed into their vehicles parked on the shoulder of the road in Tongxiao Township, Miaoli County, at around 7:00 am this morning.
Police investigating the accident said that the gravel truck hit the stationary vehicles at high speed, pushing the broken down truck an estimated 30 meters forward. One of the drivers hit was obviously dead at the scene and not taken to the hospital. The other driver was taken to hospital, but later declared dead.
The 45-year-old driver of the gravel truck, named Lin, was not seriously injured, and was taken to the police station for questioning. A blood alcohol breath test revealed that he was not affected by alcohol at the time of the crash.
Driver dead after car sandwiched between two trucks in Changhua County
The driver of a white sedan lost vital signs at the scene of the accident and was later declared dead at the hospital after his vehicle was hit from behind by a gravel truck (articulated dump truck) in Changhua County at around 8:00 am this morning.
Police said the deceased was a 42-year-old man, named Lin. The driver of a goods truck and the driver of the gravel truck were also slightly injured and sent to the hospital for medical treatment. The accident occurred at the 194.5 kilometer mark in the northbound lanes in Hemei Township.
15-vehicle pile up in tunnel causes major traffic jam
Commuters faced a major traffic jam after a chain-reaction crash involving 15 vehicles in the northbound lanes of Puding Tunnel on National Highway 3 in Taoyuan City this morning.
Police investigators said that a vehicle broke down and pulled over to the road shoulder shortly after 8:00 am. The initial accident appears to have been caused when a tow truck attending to the car was hit from behind. Traffic backed up and a complicated series of minor crashes occurred at slow speed involving 13 cars and two trucks. Northbound traffic was severely jammed until the accident scene was finally cleared at around 10:00 am.
