12 Injured in Tour Bus Accident
Eleven Vietnamese tourists and the Taiwanese driver of their tour bus were injured when the bus ran into the back of a semi-trailer on a highway near Keelung this morning at around 10:30am.
The 53 year-old driver, Mr Chen was trapped in the driver’s compartment for more than 30 minutes. Chen suffered a fractured pelvis, a lumbar vertebra fracture, and a broken thumb. Eleven passengers were taken to hospital with minor injuries, mostly to the head and hands.
The tour bus was carrying a group of 27 Vietnamese tourists who had just arrived for a four day, 3 night tour of Taiwan. The passengers had just been picked up at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport and were on route to Jiufen.
The bus company, Huafu Transport Company sent another bus to pick up the 16 uninjured passengers, and take them to their hotel accommodation in Wanhua District, Taipei City.
Police took an alcohol breath test from the driver which came up 0. Police said the suspected cause of the accident is failure to keep a safe distance between vehicles.
As the driver was pulled out of the twisted driver’s compartment, he covered his face to hide from media cameras.
