Weather Bureau warns of hazard conditions for most of Taiwan as heavy rains continue
Heavy rain continued to fall all over Taiwan today, causing localized flooding, landslides, rockfalls, tree falls and other hazards, and the Central Weather Bureau says that rainy conditions may persist until Wednesday.
Heavy rain and extremely heavy rain warnings were issued by the CWB covering all cities and counties excluding the outlying islands of Kinmen and Matsu.
While most of northern Taiwan lays under a heavy rain advisory, most of the center and south is covered by an extremely heavy rain warning.
Weather conditions are being influenced by a stationary front and a moist south-westerly airflow causing a typical rainy season weather pattern that started Tuesday, May 19.
Classes were cancelled in some townships in Pingtung County and Kaohsiung City, and residents in areas vulnerable to landslides were evacuated.
The CWB warned people not to venture into mountain areas unnecessarily and to be careful of landslides, falling rocks, and flash floods.
In Tainan City, the Tainan Municipal Government Public Works Bureau announced the closure of 6 roads and 11 bridges due to flooding.
The CWB forecasts that rain intensity in the north should ease tomorrow, May 23, as the south-westerly airflow decreases, but there is still the chance of heavy rain in mountain areas south of Miaoli, and in Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County.
Other areas may experience short localized showers and thunderstorms.
As the front moves south into the Bashi Channel on Sunday, May 24, northern districts will remain cloudy, with possible brief showers. Counties in the south and east will see brief showers and thunderstorms.
On Monday to Wednesday, the front is expected to be hovering over Taiwan again, bringing brief showers and thunderstorms.
