Weather Bureau issues maritime warning, rain and wind advisories as Typhoon Hinnamnor hovers
Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau issued a sea typhoon warning covering waters to the east, south and north of the island as moderate typhoon Himmanmor hovered around 470 kilometers east of Taiwan’s southernmost point this morning, Friday, September 2.
The CWB issued the sea warning at 8:30 am for northeastern waters, eastern waters including Orchid Island and Green Island, and the Bashi Channel. The CWB pointed out that typhoon Himmanmor had weakened to a moderate typhoon with a central pressure of 930 hPa, but the storm radius had widened. Maximum sustained wind speeds near the center are estimated at 48 meters per second (173 kilometers per hour) with maximum wind gusts of 58 meters per second (209 kilometers per hour). The radius of Beaufort Scale 7 winds is estimated at 250 kilometers, and Beaufort Scale 10 winds at 100 kilometers.
The center of the storm was located 21.5 degrees north and 125.4 degrees east at 8:00 am. Sandwiched between two high pressure systems, Himmamnor is expected to slowly move northwest then north at a speed of 11 kilometers per hour.
Most forecasts predict the eye of the storm to travel north between Miyako Island and Ishigaki Island, however, due to the position of the two high pressure systems, the guiding airflow for the typhoon is weak, and it is expected to move in a westerly direction today, before heading north. The extent of the westward movement will determine the severity of impact on Taiwan’s weather, and the possibility that a land warning will be issued cannot be ruled out, the CWB said.
Along with the maritime warning, the CWB also issued heavy rain, extremely heavy rain, and wind alerts due to the influence of the typhoon. Wind alerts covered all coastal areas, all counties and cities with the exception of Taipei City, Nantou County, and Chiayi City. Extremely heavy rain alerts were issued for mountain districts of Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, and Hsinchu County. Heavy rain alerts were issued non-mountain districts of Keelung City, Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County and Miaoli County.
