US guided-missile submarine, F-35B stealth fighters currently deployed in Western Pacific
The Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarine USS Ohio (SSGN 726) arrived in Guam January 4, to conduct surveillance, training, and other critical missions in the US 7th Fleet area of operations, according to information published by the US Navy’s Submarine Force Pacific, yesterday, January 11.
The US military rarely discloses the location or movements of its nuclear submarine fleet, and the information released is being interpreted as a message of deterrence, according to Taiwan media outlets, including China Times, and Liberty Times.
The USS Ohio is equipped with up to 154 cruise missiles and can carry 66 members of the Special Operation Forces.
The information comes two days after it was revealed that F-35B stealth fighters of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit were operating from the amphibious assault ship USS America in the Philippine Sea, also part of the US 7th Fleet area of responsibility.
The operation had the purpose of enhancing interoperability with allies and partners, and served as a prepared response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, the US military stated.
