Unlicensed, Street-racing Driver Kills 3 Pedestrians in Taipei City
Three people are dead after an unlicensed driver lost control of his vehicle while racing a friend, and plowed into a sidewalk arcade on busy Nanjing East Road this evening, October 11.
At around 5:45pm, a 21 year-old man named Hsieh, driving a black sedan, raced against his friend named Huang, who was driving a white sedan, crossing the double-yellow center lines while dodging cars and scooters in the near peak hour traffic conditions. Both men were unlicensed.
Hsieh lost control of his vehicle on section 4 of Nanjing East Road, and plowed into the sidewalk at a speed of close to 100 kilometers per hour, hitting three people.
Two of the victims were a husband and wife, 66 and 64 years-old, who were loading recycling materials into a small truck. The other victim was a 64 year-old building guard who was talking to the couple. All three had no signs of life at the scene of the accident, were rushed to three different hospitals, and later declared dead.
Hsieh, who suffered only slight injuries that were treated at the scene of the accident, told police that he had rented the car via a friend. Alcohol breath-tests confirmed that neither Hsieh nor Huang had consumed alcohol before the crash.
