University Student Murdered on Campus: Cleaner Confesses
Police arrested a suspect this morning, after the body of a woman was found at National Cheng Kung University in Tainan City last night, October 28.
Schoolmates of Ms Chen, 24, had gone to a room on the 4th floor of the School of Social Sciences to discuss research papers at around 1:00pm. They found that Chen, second-year post-graduate student, had arrived before them and put her things in the room. However, Chen did not show up for the meeting.
At around 5:00pm, the students grew worried and began searching for Chen. One of her friends noticed Chen’s feet sticking out from under a sofa in a consultation room on the second floor of the building at around 8:50pm.
Police arrived at the scene to find Chen face-down, with her clothes unruffled. There were obvious bruises on Chen’s neck, and a red cloth had been stuffed into her mouth. Police said there were signs of a struggle in the room, and immediately suspected homicide.
Police accessed security camera footage and identified a 42 year old man, named Lin as a suspect. Lin is employed as a cleaner at the campus and was seen taking an elevator with Chen from the 4th floor to the second floor before her disappearance. Lin was then seen throwing Chen’s shoes, and a bag into a trash can outside the building at around 1:00pm.
Police arrested Lin when he showed up at his ex-wife’s residence to take his child to school at around 6:30am this morning. Lin, who has previous criminal records for burglary and sex offences, admitted killing Chen. Lin claimed that he had attempted to borrow money from Chen, but Chen had refused, and that he had killed her on impulse.
According to reports, Lin had borrowed NT$1,000 from Chen on a previous occasion, but had not paid her back. Yesterday, Lin attempted to borrow a further NT$2,000.
Police are waiting on forensics reports before ruling out the possibility of sexual assault being involved.
