Two police officers dead after knife attack in Tainan City

Two police officers are dead after a suspected motorcycle thief resisting arrest attacked them with a knife in Tainan City today, Monday, August 22.

According to reports, 27-year-old Cao Ruijie and 36-year-old Tu Mingcheng from the Minquan Police Station were on a routine patrol when they spotted a suspected stolen motorcycle being ridden by a man in Annan District at around 11:00 am. When the officers pulled the suspect over in a remote location on an industrial road, the suspect attacked them with a knife.

Officers Tu and Cao both lost vital signs before arriving at the hospital, and both were later declared dead.

The suspect is believed to have stolen both officers service pistols before escaping on a Kymco scooter with the license plate 369 PGB. A toy BB pistol believed to have been discarded by the suspect was found at the scene.

Police this afternoon released the name of the suspect along with pictures. The suspect was identified as a 25-year-old man named Chen Weijie. Police warned the public to remain vigilant, and to immediately call police if they spot Chen.
