Two Kids Thrown out of Car in High-speed Rollover Accident
Two children survived being thrown out of a car after two vehicles collided and rolled over on National Freeway 1, in Chiayi County, September 3. Dramatic dash-cam footage of the accident was released to the media today.
The driver of the vehicle is suspected to have failed to pay attention to traffic conditions ahead as he overtook another vehicle. The vehicle clipped another car, causing both to roll over.
Two children in the vehicle, aged 8 and 10 years-old were not wearing seat-belts at the time of the accident, and were thrown onto the road when the car flipped over. Three people suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to reports in China Times, and other media outlets.
According to National Highway Police investigators, at around 2:00pm, September 3, a 39 year-old man named Lee was driving south from Yunlin County in a white sedan, and switched from the center lane to the inner lane to overtake another vehicle. Police said that Lee did not pay attention to the distance between his vehicle and a silver car driven by a 41 year-old man also named Lee.
Both vehicles went out of control and rolled over several times before coming to a stop. The white car stopped in the inner lane, while the silver car stopped in the outer shoulder of the road.
A boy was seen in the middle lane trying to get up after being thrown out of the car, while a girl, bleeding from her head was sitting against the inner guardrail.
Driver alcohol levels were 0. The driver of the white car faces a fine of between NT$3,000 and NT$6,000 because the children were not wearing seat-belts, according to police.
