Train Bomber Sentenced to 30 Years

A man who detonated a bomb on a local train in New Taipei City last year, injuring 25 people including himself, was handed a 30 year prison sentence by Taipei District Court Wednesday, February 22.

Lin Ying-Chang claimed that his bomb was just a crude device manufactured from firecrackers purchased at a supermarket. Lin argued that he had only sought death for himself, and had not intended to kill or injure others. Lin also said that he had purchased only one liter of gasoline which was not enough to destroy the train.

Lawyers representing Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) argued that Lin had not only damaged railway property, but had harmed the TRA’s public image. TRA paid all of the victim’s medical expenses, including those of Mr. Lin. TRA lawyers pointed out that Lin did not take responsibility for his actions and showed no remorse.

In handing down the sentence, the judge said Lin had harmed many people, including a high school student, and that manufacturing explosives was a serious crime.
