Township Mayor Indicted in Murder of Police Officer
The mayor of a small town in Taiwan’s Chiayi County has been indicted as the prime suspect in a murder investigation after a search was made in 10 locations in the township, including the mayor’s home and his office.
The Mayor of Jhuqi (Jhuci) Township, Wang Kun-hong, along with a cousin, was subpoenaed to appear in court today March 12, 2016. The mayor and his cousin have been named as a suspects in the case, and five other family members, including his wife and children were called in for questioning as witnesses.
In the evening of January 29 this year, 47 year-old police officer and SWAT team member Lin Jin-zhong was ambushed and brutally murdered with three shotgun blasts outside his wife’s art supply store in Chiayi City.
A man surnamed Liu was arrested March 3 and confessed to the shooting. His son was also arrested after being unable to explain a large sum of money deposited into his bank account. The son was in possession of airline tickets, and was suspected of intending to abscond to China with his father. The pair are in custody and have been held incommunicado since their arrest.
Investigators found nude photos of the mayor’s wife on the victim’s cellphone. The pictures had been sent by the mayor’s wife using the popular messaging app, Line, and suggested the murdered police officer had enjoyed an intimate relationship with the politician’s wife.
According to Apple Daily, the mayor is suspected of having payed 2 million Taiwan Dollars to have the man assassinated.
