Toddler’s finger bitten off by rabbit at leisure farm

A toddler who put his finger through the wire of a rabbit pen at a leisure farm in Taoyuan City had the end of one of his fingers bitten off two days ago.

The story is being widely covered in local media today after the mother of another child, who witnessed the incident, posted the story on Facebook.

The Taoyuan City Fire Bureau confirmed that the incident happened shortly before 3:00 pm Friday, September 25. A fire bureau ambulance was dispatched to the Goat World Leisure Farm in Zhongli District, to treat an injured one-year-old. The child had the pinky finger of the left hand bitten off, and the finger could not be found despite a thorough search of the rabbit pen.

Goat World said that they had ample signage warning people not to put their hands into the rabbit pen. They also added a finer meshed wire to prevent such incidents in the future. Goat World management said it was the first such incident since they opened the park in 2004.

Ms Lin a volunteer for the Taiwan Rabbit Love Association told SETN that the idea of rabbits as gentle animals is a misconception. Many rabbit owners and volunteers at the TRLA, which cares for abandoned rabbits, have been bitten.
