Tesla on Autopilot involved in fatal freeway crash

The driver of a Tesla involved in a traffic accident that left one dead and two injured was using the Autopilot feature at the time the car crashed, according to reports in United Daily News and Liberty Times.

The Tesla slammed into the back of a road maintenance vehicle near the Daxi Interchange on National Highway 3 at 9:48 pm yesterday, March 7. The 46-year-old driver suffered an injured hand, and the badly damaged Tesla was left blocking the outer lane of the freeway.

A 25-year-old road maintenance crew member, named Yu, set up traffic cones to warn oncoming drivers. However, just moments later, a BMW sedan driven by a 40-year-old man named Jiang slammed into Yu and the road maintenance vehicle.

Yu lost vital signs at the scene of the accident and was declared dead after being rushed to Taoyuan Armed Forces General Hospital.

Police urged drivers to drive according to the speed limit and to pay attention to conditions in front of the vehicle. Automated driving assistance is an auxiliary function, and drivers should keep their hands on the steering wheel at all times and continue to pay attention to road conditions.
