Tenant Arrested for Murder of Landlord

A man in Tainan City is believed to have killed his landlord over a dispute over rent yesterday, Sunday, March 18.

Police arrested a man in Xinhua District of Tainan City after 60 year-old Mr Yu was reported missing by his family. Mr Yu’s body was later found in a field beside an isolated mountain road in Guanmiao Township.

A 20 year-old man named Chen confessed to the murder, telling police that he had been dissatisfied at Yu’s attempts to collect NT$3,700 in rental arrears. Chen lured Yu to the remote area near the factory where he worked, on the pretext of paying the rent, then Chen killed Yu with a screwdriver he had taken from the factory.

Mr Yu’s family reported him missing last night after Yu had failed to come home from his simple morning rental collection mission. Police found Yu’s car parked at the Xinhua produce market, and accessed video monitors to trace the missing man’s movements.

When interviewing Mr Chen, investigators found his story suspicious. His testimony was said to be repetitive and inconsistent. Chen finally confessed that he had become irritated by Yu’s demands for rent and decided to kill him.

Chen accompanied police to the scene of the crime and recounted the course of events. The body of Mr Yu was located in underbrush not far from the edge of the road.
