Teen bashed into life-threatening condition after bumping into Maserati

An 18-year-old man remains in a coma after being beaten almost to death by three men following a minor traffic accident in Taichung City three days ago.

According to reports, on November 7, a first-year university student, named Song, driving a white Volkswagen with 4 passengers on their way home after a church meeting, sideswiped a Maserati sports car while changing lanes on Taiwan Avenue in Xitun District at around 12:40 am.

After pulling over, three men alighted from the Maserati, dragged Song out of his white Volkswagen, and beat him with fists and a baseball bat.

Three men, a 25-year-old man who was driving the Maserati, named Lee, a 23-year old man named Zhang, and a man named Chen, 19, were arrested shortly after the incident.

Song was rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery for an intracranial hemorrhage. Three days later, today, November 10, Song remains in a critical condition in a coma with a Glascow coma index of 6.

Police were criticized for light treatment of the suspects, having charged them with the crime of injury and allowing them to remain at large. However, after learning of the serious nature of Song’s injuries, charges have since been increased to attempted murder, disruption of social order, and other crimes.

According to the investigation so far, police say that the driver of the Maserati is unemployed, and the car is registered in his mother’s name. Song had accidentally bumped into the Maserati and tried to apologize before being severely beaten. During the incident, the three thugs repeatedly threatened the passengers in Song’s car, warning them not to call the police.

All three suspects have previous criminal records for assault.

Pretty normal actually. Police in Taiwan normally just write reports about incidents….and it’s the court’s job to say if people should be arrested. Police in Taiwan are more like secretaries.
